Canker is caused by a mite, picked up in grass, often dropped from foxes. The most usual form are brownish, waxy scabs inside. the ears. These are made by the mite wishing to chew the ear in the dark. The scabs can be dry, or weep slightly, causing a smell. The outer type is more offensive and stinks of gangrene, while discharging globs of pus.
In both cases, the symptoms are scratching, head shaking, rubbing of ears on floor and general distress. There can be red sores inflammation and blood clots, caused by the constant scratching. There are no antibiotics in Thornit.
For all Thornit applications, only a very small amount is required. Care should be taken as the lodoform contained could stain light carpet or furnishings.
Directions for use on Ears.
Any excess moisture should be mopped up using cotton wool. Do not remove wax. Get the animal in a lying position on its side. You may need assistance. Fold the ear back, and apply the powder using the end of a spoon. Lightly dust around the ear, avoiding the ear hole. Fold the ear back and gently massage in with your fingers from the outside of the ear. Apply Thornit twice a day, and continue for 1-5 days until the brownish wax starts to move - meaning the mite is dead. At this stage, stop. For dogs with long ears, it is advisable to dip the tip of the ears in Thornit every week. Can also be used for plucking ears.
Directions for General Use.
A mite can transfer to other parts of the body - you may notice the pet in constant motion, scratching or biting parts of their body. Lightly dust Thornit over the body - a little goes a long way. For longer coated breeds, brush the hair back and apply a small amount of powder directly to the skin.
Directions for use on Anus.
If the animal drags its bottom on the floor, and it is not anal gland issues, the mites may have made a breeding bed under the tail. Wearing a glove, apply a thin amount of cream to the finger and dip in Thornit. Apply just under the tail where necessary.
Directions for use on Paws.
Mites can get between claws, making the animal first lick their paws, turning the pads to jelly, leading to tearing out their fur then finally nibbling a hole. Hold the paw in a plastic bag containing Thornit and rub into the paw, between claws, and a little way up the leg.
